It is common – though not always mandatory – for international students to study ESL when they first arrive in Canada. ESL prepares speakers of English as a second language for the regular language demands of the Canadian classroom.
The Ontario curriculum offers five levels of English as a second language education, from Level A (beginner) to Level E (proficient). Students must demonstrate proficiency at the ESL “E” level before being admitted to mainstream Grade 11 English.
Permission for ESL speakers to enter the mainstream English program is granted by school administration.
