Overview

The foundation

The foundation of the universities in Krakow, Vienna and Pécs followed a uniform procedure stipulated by the Holy See under Pope Urban V (1362-1370). After a comprehensive investigation of the High Court of Justice, the charter of the university was sent along with the documents on the privileges that are provided by the city for the members of the university. In the case of Pécs, the city was unable to provide the latter documents, as the citizens of Pécs as an episcopal civitas were all along under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Pécs. Therefore it must have been the founder, the bishop himself who guaranteed the privileges of the professors and students of the university. The papal bull issued by Urban V and dated 1 September 1367 in Viterbo granted authorisation for the operation of the university in Pécs.

There were five institutions of higher education in Pécs at the beginning of the 1970s: University of Pécs, Teacher Training College of Pécs, Medical University of Pécs, Polack Mihály Technical College and the Affiliated Section of Liszt Ferenc Music Academy. After the separation of Erzsébet University in 1950, the University of Pécs (with its only faculty, the Faculty of Law) and the Medical University continued to function as autonomous institutions, and several of their departments performed the same tasks under the new organisational structure as before. As the first step in the integration of the higher education in the city, the school of economics was merged with the University of Pécs and became its Faculty of Economics in 1975, followed by the Faculty of Education in 1982. The new institution assumed the name of Janus Pannonius University (JPU). 1 January 1982 TTCP was merged with UP, creating the third faculty, the Faculty of Education (FE). The diverse disciplinary structure of training had grown beyond the organisational framework of the Faculty of Education by 1990. By separating the special fields, the Faculty of Humanities (FH) and the Faculty of Sciences (FS) were established on 1 January 1992. The final large step towards integration was taken by the merger of PMTC and JPU in 1995: the University had become the third largest institution of higher education in the country. The former College of Health Sciences has been operating as a faculty of the University since 2006, offering training in Pécs as well as in its training centres in Kaposvár, Szombathely and Zalaegerszeg where they work in close collaboration with the local hospitals both in teaching and research. The Faculty of Adult Education and Human Resources Development was established in 2005 as the tenth faculty of the University of Pécs. Earlier, the units of the Faculty had operated within the Faculty of Sciences. The College of Health Sciences becomes a full-fledged university faculty under the name of Faculty of Health Sciences in 2006. The name of the Pollack Mihály Faculty of Engineering becomes Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. With the merger of the Faculty of Adult Education and Human Resources Development and the Illyés Gyula Teacher Training College of Szekszárd the Faculty of Culture, Teacher Training and Regional Development is formed. The university has nine faculties in 2015. The Faculty of Pharmacy will be established, the University of Pécs will have 10 faculties again in 2016.
